ABOUT RAEWYN TOUGAS

Raewyn Tougas is an accomplished and successful international artist. She has produced and sold over two-hundred paintings during her lifetime, in commercial, individual and commissioned art works.

New Zealand

Born in New Zealand, her earliest memories of loving art were admiring her mother’s beautiful sketches of 1930’s movie stars. But drawing was always a precursor to painting for her.

She entered and won her first competition at age seven with several additional childhood art contests as she progressed.

At sixteen, she placed third in Auckland’s largest art competition, competing against her elder piers.

Always at the top of her class for art in school, she passed the entrance exams for both the prestigious Sydney Art school and university attendance, though she did not attend due to her young age.

Australia

At twenty, Raewyn Mahony married and became Raewyn Roberts, moving to Cairns, Australia, where she lived for the next forty years. Working and raising two sons did not stop her from producing artwork. All sold in various art shows, galleries and exhibitions. This led to many commissions, including a twelve-painting collection for a board room of a real estate office in Cairns.

  • First place in the Cairns Art show,
  • Best shop window in the annual Fun-In- the-Sun festival in Cairns.
  • Second place twice in the Mareeba Art Show
  • Best poster, city of Cairns, reconciliation awareness project
  • Sold sixteen out of twenty-two paintings at the DFO gallery in Cairns.

In the eighties, she had a very successful hand painted T-shirt business, marketing to high-end boutiques. After four years though, she was missing her true calling and returned to her easel.

She formed a rare and very successful alliance with an outstanding aboriginal artist, Roslyn Serico. Their combined talents merging to keep traditional aboriginal art and stories alive for future generations. Raewyn painting the scene and Roslyn painting the ancient stories. These works both unique and beautiful. Their collaborated art not only sold to government agencies, but also to private collectors and though the wonderful efforts of the Yuka-Baja-Muliku gallery in Cooktown.

United States

Raewyn changed countries once again in 2019 to marry Denis Tougas. He continues to inspire and support her art. She continues to sell commissioned pieces as well as her own art work in Australia and the United States. She has also branched into book cover art, having already completed two, one of which is already in print, the cover for the book; The Feast of Angels.
She won the Greenwood Festival of flowers art competition in 2020.

When not painting, she’s out in her garden, another palette of colors for her to tend to.

Favorite quote; “Art, an extension of the soul and mind.”
